Mid to late 20th century freshening of the western tropical South Atlantic triggered by southward migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone

چکیده

In the tropical Atlantic Ocean, Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is an important climate feature controlled by interhemispheric sea surface temperature (SST) gradient, and greatly influences rainfall patterns over adjacent continents. To better understand ITCZ dynamics in context of past future change, long-term oceanic records are needed, but observational data limited temporal extent. Shallow-water corals provide seasonally-resolved archives variability ocean. Here we present stable oxygen (δ18O) carbon (δ13C) isotope values a Siderastrea stellata coral from northeastern Brazil (Maracajaú, ~5°S). We show that trends record δ18O not primarily driven SST hydrological changes at surface. Combining with instrumental SST, first reconstruction seawater (δ18Oseawater) western South back to early 20th century, parameter related salinity. The reconstructed δ18Oseawater indicate prominent freshening between mid-1940's mid-1970's, which coincides weakening gradient during this time interval. Our results suggest weakened resulted southward shift thermal equator was accompanied migration ITCZ, resulting mid late century.

Southward migration of the intertropical convergence zone through the Holocene.

Titanium and iron concentration data from the anoxic Cariaco Basin, off the Venezuelan coast, can be used to infer variations in the hydrological cycle over northern South America during the past 14,000 years with subdecadal resolution. Following a dry Younger Dryas, a period of increased precipitation and riverine discharge occurred during the Holocene "thermal maximum." Since approximately 54...

Freshening of the Ross Sea during the late 20th century.

Ocean measurements in the Ross Sea over the past four decades, one of the longest records near Antarctica, reveal marked decreases in shelf water salinity and the surface salinity within the Ross Gyre. These changes have been accompanied by atmospheric warming on Ross Island, ocean warming at depths of approximately 300 meters north of the continental shelf, a more negative Southern Oscillation...

Century-scale movement of the Atlantic Intertropical Convergence Zone linked to solar variability

[1] The abundance of the planktic foraminifer Globigerinoides sacculifer in Gulf of Mexico (GOM) sediments is a proxy for the influx of Caribbean surface waters (the Loop Current) into the GOM. Penetration of the Loop Current into the GOM is related to the position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ): northward migration of the ITCZ results in increased incursion of the Loop Current in...

Anthropogenic sulfate aerosol and the southward shift of tropical precipitation in the late 20th century

[1] In this paper, we demonstrate a global scale southward shift of the tropical rain belt during the latter half of the 20th century in observations and global climate models (GCMs). In rain gauge data, the southward shift maximizes in the 1980s and is associated with signals in Africa, Asia, and South America. A southward shift exists at a similar time in nearly all CMIP3 and CMIP5 historical...

The intertropical convergence zone modulates intense hurricane strikes on the western North Atlantic margin.

Most Atlantic hurricanes form in the Main Development Region between 9°N to 20°N along the northern edge of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). Previous research has suggested that meridional shifts in the ITCZ position on geologic timescales can modulate hurricane activity, but continuous and long-term storm records are needed from multiple sites to assess this hypothesis. Here we prese...
